Welcome to the New Zealand Crime Dashboard, developed by Flex Space. The app combines interactive maps and detailed charts to present suburb crime statistics in New Zealand, allowing you to identify trends and gain insight into crime patterns.

We began this project in response to an apparent increase in crime, and gun violence where we hoped to find out whether the media coverage was representative of the real world facts. By merging information from the New Zealand Police and Statistics New Zealand, we incorporate geographic context into crime statistics in a meaningful way.

This project uses open data, sourced from the New Zealand Police and Statistics New Zealand.

While every endeavour has been made to ensure data shown in this dashboard is accurate, we acknowledge that there may be errors. In any circumstance, we recommend performing your own research to confirm figures.

Source crime data can be found here, at the New Zealand Police site. For this dashboard, we have used the Victimisations Report (Time and Place)

All data has been aggregated to the Area 2 unit level, which you can find at Statistics New Zealand.

Known Issues/Notes

In some circumstances particular crime statistics were recorded as unknown (e.g day or hour of day). In these cases, we have left unknown data off their respective charts, but this should not affect the total crime figures for that location.

The Meshblock number associated to some records could not be found, and as a result have been left off this dashboard. Therefore the overall count of crimes is higher than what is displayed here. Unfortunately, with no way to categorise the crime to a particular location, these crimes have been left out altogether.
